Wooden Dummies

The dummy is a training equipment very much used in the study and mastery of several Chinese martial arts philosophies. These wooden dummies are also known as muk yan jong or mu ren zhuang in China, and are commonly used in Wing Chun, Jeet Kune Do and Choy Lee Fut.

There are two main groups of dummies – dead and alive. Alive dummies are referred to as such because they have a certain springiness to them. They are usually mounted to a wall, and are very popular because the springiness is similar to human movement when hit. Dummies which do not have this spring to them are called dead dummies. These are more traditional and somewhat limiting with regard to movement.

Wooden dummies are used to stimulate combat, and this is why they are considered important training equipment in many forms of martial arts. Some modern dummies may be made of other materials for durability, but those made of high-quality wood may do the job just as well.
